4X STANLEY CUP CHAMPION HEADS TO WINDSOR
Darren McCarty Debuts 1st ComiCon Convention Appearance at Windsor.
Windsor, ON. Windsor ComiCon presented by Cartoon Kingdom is thrilled to welcome 4x Stanley Cup Champion and Detroit Red Wings Alumni Darren McCarty to its 2019 guest line-up. McCarty will be making his first comic convention appearance at Windsor this Fall.
As one of the most successful hockey players to ever come out of the Windsor-Essex region, McCarty was raised in Leamington, Ontario where he took to the game of hockey under the development of the South Point Minor Hockey Association. He was a regular on South Point’s various travel teams for his age group but his development soon exceeded that of his peers and was soon playing Junior B. His hockey journey took him to Peterborough with the Roadrunners before signing as a free agent with Belleville of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he earned First Team All Star honors with the Bulls and won the Jim Mahon Memorial Award; all the while garnering significant attention from several NHL teams. The rest of McCarty’s story is well-known to most local hockey fans: Drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round with the 49th overall pick in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, he would play one year with the Wings’ AHL affiliate in Adirondack before embarking on a memorable 13-year NHL career. From the moment he pulled the Wing-Wheeled jersey over his shoulders, McCarty endeared himself to Red Wing fans, with a tough and gritty style of play that gave no quarter and asked none in return. As dominant scorer and enforcer for the Wings, his was the perfect game for a blue-collar city like Detroit, and through the years he came to embody the very essence of Hometown Hockey. Joined with longtime line mates Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby, the trio – forever remembered in Detroit hockey history as the Grind Line – specialized in shutting down the top offensive lines of the Wings’ opponents. The rewards were none other than one of the most ultimate prizes in all of sports: 4 Stanley Cup championships in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008 respectively, which was only hockey prize that ever mattered to this ultimate team player. The memories of these championships became some of the most lasting ones in Detroit hockey history where Wings fans worldwide hold dear to this day.
McCarty was awarded with the NHL Foundation Player Award in 2003 onto whom gives freely of his time to charitable and worthwhile causes in the Detroit and Windsor-Essex County areas. He was also inducted into the Windsor/Essex Sports Hall of Fame and Museum as an athlete with the Class of 2014.
