A REAL AMERICAN HERO TO ATTEND WINDSOR COMICON
Windsor ComiCon announces its 1st Guest of 2018 through Larry Hama.
Windsor, ON. Windsor ComiCon is pleased to announce its 1st guest of the 2018 season through American comic-book writer, artist and actor, Larry Hama.
Best known to comic book readers as a writer and editor for Marvel Comics, Hama wrote the licensed series G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero based on the Hasbro toy line. He has also written for the series Wolverine, Nth Man: The Ultimate Ninja and Elektra to name a few and had created the character Bucky O’Hare, which was developed in a comic book, toy line and television cartoon.
In addition to his writing success, Hama played minor roles in a variety of TV shows including M*A*S*H and Saturday Night Live. He also appeared on Broadway in two roles in the original 1976 production of Stephen Sondheim’s Pacific Overtures.
Yet, his background in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971 during the Vietnam War as an explosive ordnance expert informed his editing of the 1986-1993 Marvel Comics series The ‘Nam. Furthermore, it would aid him in developing an idea for a Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off series, Fury Force, about a special mission force that would be used as the concept and back-story for G.I. Joe. Hama included military terms and strategies, Eastern philosophy, martial arts and historical references from his own background. The comic series ran for 155 issues between 1982-1994.
Of special consideration, Hama wrote the majority of G.I. Joe action figures’ file cards (short biographical sketches designed to be clipped from the cardboard backings of the toy line). These file cards were re-printed for the packaging for the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero 25th Anniversary line. Lastly, Hama would go on to write for a variety of spin-off G.I. Joe series including but not limited to IDWs G.I. Joe Origins.
“Hama solidified the lore and culture belonging to many of the 1980s iconic characters featured through G.I. Joe,” says ComiCon President, Colin Douglas. “He is an inspiration to children everywhere belonging to that generation and a real American hero.”
Larry Hama is presented by Jeremy Renaud.
